The Customer

Nalon SRL

Sites: 92 branches and offices of a leading Italian bank chain spread across the country.

Building Automation System: Carel

HVAC System \ IDUs: Daikin VRV and Mitsubishi Electric VRF Systems \ 1472

Devices Used: CoolMaster Gateways

The Challenge

With dozens of heterogeneous sites spread across the Italian peninsula, a leading Italian banking group was struggling to centrally manage HVAC operations.

Reliance on manual, local control made it difficult to enforce consistent settings, optimize schedules, and prevent unnecessary runtime. As a result, the group faced increased equipment wear and excessive energy consumption.

This prompted a decision: consolidating control using CAREL building management systems. However, integrating HVAC across all locations via multiple OEM gateways would have been complex and costly, resulting in multiple points of failure, high procurement and implementation costs, as well as inefficient spare parts management.

The banking group turned to its automation integrator, Nalon SRL, to find a smarter solution.

The Solution

Guided by MARCOM SRL, a leading Verona-based provider of industrial control and communication solutions, Nalon discovered CoolAutomation’s universal HVAC gateways.

Simplified Integration Architecture
By installing one CoolMaster gateway at each location, Nalon delivered a simple, scalable, and efficient integration solution that was replicated across the customer’s sites.

Native, Bi-Directional Communication
CoolAutomation’s devices, which communicate natively with HVAC systems, established a robust bi-directional communication with the CAREL BMS via Modbus RTU.

The Result
Centralized HVAC management both on-site and across locations.

Traditional Approach Vs CoolAutomation Way

Traditional ApproachCoolAutomation Way
Dedicated gateways are needed for each HVAC brand, and often for different system models.
A single, universal CoolMaster gateway is installed at each location.
Dozens of gateways are installed across multiple sites, requiring complex wiring at each location.
A consistent integration architecture is replicated across all locations, reducing setup complexity & supporting a scalable rollout.
Lengthy development and configuration work are needed for BMS integration and unit mapping.
Plug-and-play installation simplifies commissioning.
Long-term maintenance requires stocking different gateways, each tied to a specific HVAC brand/model.
Spare parts management is simplified, as the same gateway is used across all sites
Numerous devices and connections create more communication and control failure points.
Fewer devices, connections, and dependencies reduce potential points of failure, improving long-term reliability.

Benefits

benefits
Faster Rollout

A standardized integration architecture shortened design, development, implementation, and commissioning timelines
benefits
Simple Setup

Single-device, plug-and-play installation and automatic zone detection made configuration significantly easier.
benefits
Reduced Gateway Procurement Costs

Hardware acquisition expenses were 23% lower than projected.
